Can A Small Business Afford Internet Marketing?
You Have To Pay To Play
It always amazes me, that some small business owners think they can throw a website together, put it online, and sit back and watch the bucks, or the leads, or whatever, roll in. Why would they think that? What other forms of advertising or promotion are essentially free? None, of course. And internet marketing is no different. You have to pay to play.
It May Cost Less Than You Think To Promote Your Website
That said, compared to other forms of advertising (local Yellow Pages; newspaper display ads, radio or tv) the cost of promoting your website may be lower, for the same return on investment (ROI). The internet is still a very affordable medium for a lot of players.
If You Advertise In The Yellow Pages, You Might Want To Try Online
Our own company, Small Business Online, is currently running a yellow pages display ad in our local market. One third of the year has gone by already, and the ad has brought only a couple of phone calls. Unless things really change in the next eight months, our ROI will be in the red, and this will be our last year for the Yellow Pages. By contrast, our own internet marketing is our main pipeline for new clients, and the ROI is wonderful. Here are some clients we know who are dumping their Yellow Pages or newspaper advertising in favor of less expensive, and more successful, internet marketing: a flooring supplier; an event planner; a retail furniture store; a tent rental company. And we have talked to many others who are considering the move. If you have done well in the Yellow Pages in the past, it may pay you to take a look at internet marketing.
