Managing Your Time When There Is Too Much To Do

How Do You Prioritize Your Time?

I heard a short interview on the radio yesterday with author Julie Morgenstern (Never Check E-Mail In the Morning : And Other Unexpected Strategies for Making Your Work Life Work). Disclaimer: I have not read the book. I just want to comment solely on something I heard her say in the radio interview. When Morgenstern was first asked how to prioritize a pile of things to do, she answered that you should always do what is the least number of steps away from generating revenue for your business or company. Julie gets my first ever "Hogwash Award," for giving out advice that is more nonsense than common sense.

Prioritizing Means Looking At Big Picture

If I prioritized my work list by simply doing whatever was closest to generating some cash, my business would never grow or evolve. Whatever happened to long range planning? To the big picture? Right now, today, I could choose to focus on a couple of small clients, who, if I do their bit of work, I can bill a couple of hundred dollars. But you know what? That's not my only concern. I have a great idea for a new type of project, which may well bring in a thousand times more revenue than the other choice for today. Rather than focus on the short term cash gain, today I will choose to focus on my more long range plan, that will eventually bring in much more cash. Sure, there's always something to do, when it comes to the small stuff. Often, it may be "one step" away from generating some cash. But frequently, other things, while they may be several steps away from generating cash, are simply more important.
