Will Paying For Web Traffic Help Your Online Business?

Part 1. Paid Advertising.

For a small online business, it can be difficult to decide if paid advertising is a good way to promote your website. There are a lot of competing claims on the internet, and many companies offering to deliver traffic to your website door are really just a notch above spammers. One company that offers a reliable, easy to use system for dipping your toe into online advertising is a company called Adbrite.

Self-Service Advertising To Promote Your Website

The Adbrite website offers an easy to use interface that allows you to place a small text ad on a wide variety of websites, from tiny "mom & pop" sites to destinations like the mighty social networking site Friendster or the gaming site The Crims. You can choose from sites across a selection of industries (although the sites within each industry group did not seem as focused as you may want). The control panel gives you the ability to select the sites where your ad will appear, to "cap" what you can spend, and to select when the campaign will run.

Testing Is The Most Important Part

The most compelling aspect of using a system like Adbrite is that you can test, test, test. And if you want to effectively market your online business, you must test. You should make sure that where your ad appears will provide targetted traffic. Although some vendors on the Adbrite system are offering Pay Per Click, it is largely a "flat fee" type of arrangement, so you want to drive traffic to your site through a well-focused ad. Once you start getting traffic flowing to your site, test which ads are the most cost-effective. The Adbrite system lets you set up "conversion tracking," so you can see which ad is working best. Finally, weed out the poor performing ads and websites, and focus on the best ROI. It is a great system for allowing a small online business to test the waters -- emphasis on the word "Test."

Paying for web traffic can definitely help your online business provided it is done effectively. I have used Google's advertising programs in the past which increased traffic significantly. Needless to say it increased sales as well :)

This is somewhat related to your blog but it is more of a question or search for help.

We use a number of different ppc services at MyWhiteboards.com including Overture and Google 0ver the past few months we have days were our traffic really spikes up on a few search terms like "bulletin boards" and the traffic isn't coming from the regular search engines but no name engines like hooowah.com and click2start.com

The results are almost all just a single click into the home page and almost immediately back out again... looking like a false click scheme.

We have sent our logs to both Yahoo and Google without success...

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or have you had a similar thing happen on your site?
