Paying For Web Traffic - Part 2 - Text Link Ads

Part 2. Paid Text Link Ads

In part 1 of this discussion about paying for web traffic, I looked at the idea of buying ads to be placed on other sites in order to drive traffic to your website. Part 2 looks at a related, but different animal: paid text link ads.

What Are Paid Text Link Ads?

The key feature of text link ads is that they are not really designed to drive visitors to your site (if they do, that is considered a nice bonus). Text link ads are simply a mechanism for purchasing a link on another site that will help increase your website's "link popularity," in order to help your site improve its ranking in the search engines. In other words, you are paying to improve your "organic" search engine ranking. The crucial component is the "text," because it is here that you plug in the keyword or phrase for which you are trying to get a better ranking.

Where Can You Buy Them

The two most common ways to purchase text link ads are via a broker, or directly from a website. Two well-known brokers (with whom we have no relationship) are TextLinkBrokers.com and Text Link Ads, and both are reputed to be honest brokers. This is important in a field where scams are as common as fruitflies in May.

Do Text Link Ads Work?

The short answer is: they can. It's a tricky area to get into, because first, there are many fraudulent and/or useless offers out there, and second, because the search engines may be trying to spot and devalue these links, as far as link popularity is concerned. If you are considering this marketing approach, you should select your links with great care.

Further Reading On Text Link Ads

Armed with the right knowledge, you can decide if text link ads are right for you. A recent article by Jill Whalen of HighRankings.com is an excellent place to start reading. And also from HighRankings, here is a list of articles on link text ads. These resources go into the topic in far more detail than I can cover in the blog. But if you're thinking of shelling out money to buy such links, I strongly encourage you to do your research. It may be appropriate in some cases, but you need to know what you are getting into. And as always, if it seems too good to be true...
