Finding Quality Links By Tracking The Competition

There are many ways to look for links to your website, as you'll see from a quick glance at this website's link building page. One of the most effective ways is to spy on your competition -- see who is linking to them -- and go after the same links yourself.

Which competitors should you spy on?

That's an easy one! Spy on the ones who are doing the best in the search engines. If company A is beating the pants off you in the SEO battle, find out who is linking to them. It stands to reason that if company A is ranking high for the keywords you want to rank for, the in-bound links to company A's website contain some diamonds hidden in the rough. Your job is to identify those diamonds, and go after those links for your site also.

How do you find out who is linking to your competitor's website?

Fortunately for the small, online business, it's getting easier every day. There are two basic methods -- methodical backlink analysis, and the more random, daily spying that keeps you on top of your competitor's newest links.

First, the standard backlink analysis. Here, you use one of the numerous tools available to analyze your competitor's backlinks. I like Backlink Analyzer from SEO Book. Then, using common sense, you approach each website owner from whom you would like a link, and ask for it, always remembering to give them something of value also. (a link back, a mention, a lead, a ten dollar bill -- be creative). Using this method, and staying organized, you can slowly work through all the links pointing to your competitor's site.

Second, keep up with new links on a daily basis. For this, you want to use a good alert system. Notice I said "good." The basic alert services from Google and Yahoo! are fun, but they won't be adequate for this task. Here, I like a company called GoogleAlert, which, despite its confusing name, is not part of Google, but is Google-approved. It's a paid service, but well worth it. You can enter any combination of keywords, urls, or whatever, into the system, and it will alert you every time new content mentioning that keyword appears on the web. To spy on competitor's links, simply set up one or two alerts using their company name, their domain name, etc. You'll immediately start following their new links on a daily basis. Then, simply follow those links, as before, and try to get some for yourself.

Happy link hunting!
