Good SEO Means Staying Organized
There may be some people who can keep it all in their head, but I'm not one of them. Trying to do SEO is like trying to grab hold of a giant slippery balloon with both arms -- it's really hard to do!
One of the things that makes the internet so unique and fascinating is its lack of control, its disorganization, its chaos. But that can make it tough when you are trying to do search engine optimization! I'm sure you've sat down at your computer intending to look for one single thing, and three hours later, you're still sitting there, drawn on and on by interesting links. But how do you handle that problem if you only have 30 minutes a day to devote to your search marketing? The answer is, you get organized.
If you're looking for links to your website, chances are you're surfing the net in pursuit of those links. The way I handle my organization is to already have a place (a Word doc, a spreadsheet) where I am going to put my "link leads." Then, as I surf the net, I grab leads but I don't analyze them or respond to them. I dump them into my basket, add a notation if necessary, and keep surfing. Then I keep surfing, for my allocated amount of time. Later on, I will come back to that basket of leads, and start working them.
By dividing the link-building process into two distinct functions, I can allocate time for hunting, and time for analyzing and follow up. They are separate tasks, and you probably want to figure out how to keep them separate. Otherwise, you may find yourself sitting at your monitor at 3 A.M. wondering how the heck you got to where you are.
